Punkins.  It's the season.
This year they say the fruit is smaller because of the drought here in the states. I don't know if Canada was hit as badly as we were so maybe the pumpkins up north are bigger and will be better for carving but down here what they're going to be good for is cooking.

There are the traditional seasonal punkin dishes__
And the not so traditional ones__

[mmm__stuffed pumpkin].

I went looking for a few new recipes. Here are a few I found that I thought I'd like to try.

Pumpkin Brownies__:)

There are a few more but I resist an inundation. I just picked up a small punkin and am eager to try the knots and the chili. I think that'll be all the meat from this small fruit I'll have to work with. I wonder how well pumpkin meat freezes? I really don't like to can.

  1. The pumpkin brownies ... I think I will have to try this. I love pumpkin bread and pumpkin bars, but dislike pumpkin pie - it's a texture thing.

  2. I found a recipe for pumpkin scones, too, but I thought the brownies sounded pretty good.

  4. From what I've seen of the punkin pickin's so far... I think I will be carving hobbits this year and not my normal gigantasaurs... *sigh*

It's harder to carve the little ones cause the skin is still too thick.. :( oh well I suppose I'm up for the task.

those pumpkin knots look good though. I'll prolly do the traditional pie this weekend for thanksgiving.. but I used canned pumpkin for that hee hee..

  5. A friend uses a drill to get started on the small ones for carving.

  6. My mom used to draw on the pumpkins instead of carving them because they lasted longer AND she could cook them later. She was very practical-minded :)

The knots sound delicious! I downloaded that recipe, the brownies and the scones. I usually don't start cooking pumpkins until a little later, though maybe I'll start early this year.

  7. I haven't done any carving since we moved back here; one year I did star wars pumpkins. That was awesome...My hands won't take the stress anymore. Those knots look like they'd be good.

  10. I keep looking at that chili and I keep thinking about this huge can of hominy I have in the cupboard. Maybe instead of chili I'll try a rendition of pozolé instead.

  11. Someone in the neighborhood has managed to grow a bunch of little pumpkins, max size about 4 inches in diameter. I'm not sure where they are growing, but the squirrels have delivered three of them to my yard so far. I picked one up and brought it inside. The others I left, and the squirrels returned for Squirrel Thanksgiving. What a mess. I'm imagining a squirrel's nest somewhere with little jack-o-lanterns stored for the cold months.
